Typically, we recommend that the male and female bracket be the same length.
However, in some instances you may want the male to be shorter than the female bracket because you can slide the finished shelf further into a corner. You'll find more about that in our alternate installation section.
That said, you will have to make sure that the set screws still connect with the male bracket that is on the wall.
