We see this question from time to time. You have a little bit of wiggle room but your best bet is to aim for the distance from the bottom ledge of the bracket installed into the shelf as seen below:
As you can see, you have a tiny bit of leeway, but its important to make sure you have it essentially in the middle of the thicker part of the male bracket's leg as above.
